What Happened to Miniature Fuel Cells? Why are they still not there??

In the past few years, the search for alternative power sources that could replace lithium-ion batteries have gone under the banner of fuel cells. They were promised the glory of the successors to the batteries used in laptops, cell phones, PDAs, smartphones and portable players. The appetites of these devices grew, spurred on by increasing functionality, primarily multimedia. As you know, working with video and sound does not spare the computing resource, which, in turn, negatively affects the battery life.

Meanwhile, despite the efforts of old-timers of the industry and young companies created specifically for the development of fuel cells, things have not yet come to serious success. Major players remain silent, and the point of application of efforts seems to have shifted from compact power sources that can replace rechargeable batteries to more bulky external devices designed to charge all the same lithium-ion batteries. As for the circle of potential consumers, it is still limited by the military and representatives of narrow market niches.

What’s the matter? Will fuel cells find their way to the mass market??

First, the development, in fact, turned out to be too difficult, the source believes. Fuel cells suitable for mass practical use are not so easy to create, as some participants in the process believed (at least when it comes to products of an acceptable cost).
