NASA and SGI deploy the world’s largest SSI system

According to the source, NASA chose SGI Altix supercomputer, evaluating possible alternatives among new generation equipment in the high-performance systems (HPC) category. The system acquisition is part of a technology upgrade program that will replace the existing Columbia supercomputer system in four phases.

According to the published plans, the new NASA supercomputer will be installed at the Ames Research Center in August this year. The system is said to be the world’s first supercomputer with 2,048 processor cores and 4TB of memory running a single copy of Linux.

Thus, NASA will have the world’s largest single system image (SSI). The advantage of SSI is the ability to allocate the entire resource of a supercomputer to solve one problem.

Supercomputer uses 1,024 Intel Itanium 2 dual-core processors. System performance is estimated at 13.1 TFLOPS (Trillions of Floating Point Operations Per Second). The supercomputer configuration will include SGI InfiniteStorage 10000 disk storage with a capacity of 240 TB.
