LG Philips water and oil flexible screens

LG Philips Joint Venture
LCD specialized in design and production
displays, announced the development of a flexible display made with the use of
organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) on a plastic backing.

The company recently applied for a patent for
its technology for the production of roll-up screens, which use
OLED elements, oil and water for image generation.

One of the difficulties of production is the fact that OLED elements
must be produced at a higher temperature than the melting point
the backing, which, recall, is plastic. To overcome this
LEDs must first be created on a glass substrate and only then
transferred to plastic. As you might guess, this complexity is
an additional step in the production process that lengthens the production
cycle and allows you to reject defective workpieces, which in turn,
affects the final price of such a display.

LG Philips came up with a new idea – instead of creating pixels in these screens from
OLED cells, they create them from water and oil contained in small cells
plastic connected to electrodes. Oil that is opaque,
flows over the water and obscures the colored surface underneath. Use of forces
electric field allows you to push the oil out of the water and thereby open
color layer underneath.

Nevertheless, it is possible to control such a screen,
but not as often as we would like, in the sense that the rate of state change
flexible screen is still very small. Now such flexible screens can be
use for applications where static rather than dynamic is used
picture. Such screens will find their application in all kinds of mobile
terminals. Just imagine a mobile phone, the screen of which can be
expand to A4 sheet! However, high consumption can be an obstacle
energy.
