Panda Software: new version of the malware utility MPack
PandaLabs has discovered a new version 0.90 of the malicious Mpack utility that sells online for $ 1,000. This application can be called an “exploit-assisted malware installation kit” because it detects and downloads exploits to the PC for multiple security holes.
Cybercriminals even offer free one year support to those who purchase this version. Hackers looking to update Mpack with new exploits can purchase them for between $ 50 and $ 150 each.
The infection process begins with a hacker visiting a specific web page, to which he adds an iframe link leading to the server where Mpack is installed. If the user views such a page, Mpack is launched. Then a search for vulnerabilities is performed on the user’s computer, and if any are found, the malicious code downloads the corresponding exploit to the PC.
PandaLabs research confirms that there may be about 350,000 active infected web pages on the network at the moment.
Immediately after it enters the computer, the exploit is launched and begins collecting data on the infected system (browser, operating system, etc.). This information is then sent and stored on the server. PandaLabs has already detected 41 servers accepting such data. Already from these servers, cyber criminals can generate statistics on the types of operating systems or web browsers installed on infected PCs, and even on the number of infections in a given section.
Hackers use a variety of technologies to trick users into visiting certain web pages, including sending spam, using fake domains (for example, gookle instead of google,) or infecting pages that users already visit very often.
