Atmel begins shipping ultra-slim HD-DVD and Blu-ray drives

Atmel Announces Availability of ATR1841 and ATR1842 Photodiode Chips (FMDs) Used in HD-DVD and Blu-ray Optical Head Units. Thanks to their miniature dimensions – 3 x 3 mm – the novelties are suitable for slim and ultra-slim drives.

As the HD-DVD and Blu-ray market evolves, drive manufacturers are looking for ways to reduce component sizes to enable thin and ultra-thin notebook drives. At the same time, they are trying to improve the quality characteristics of the element base. New Atmel products are not only extremely small, but also feature improved noise, performance and gain.

The ATR1841 and ATR1842 support all wavelengths used in CD, DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray drive heads. Both products are equipped with serial interfaces and have three gain modes (with the ability to adjust the gain level within ± 6 dB in each mode). This, firstly, eliminates the need for an external potentiometer to adjust the gain, and, secondly, it reduced the number of microcircuit pins. In turn, the reduced number of pins made it possible to choose for design a QFN package with dimensions of 3 x 3 mm.

Interestingly, according to the manufacturer, the manufacturing technology used by Atmel makes it possible to produce photodiodes that do not degrade even with prolonged exposure to blue laser studies and high temperatures (typical operating conditions for an optical head in HD-DVD / Blu-ray drives). which allows you to extend the life of your drives.
