Intel – about Penryn, AMD – about Griffin, and what other participants of the Hot Chips conference will talk about?
From August 19 to 21, Stanford University will host the Hot Chips conference, which will present participants with information on the most modern CPU and GPU, such as the IBM Power6 and GPUs from AMD and NVIDIA. Among the less familiar names to the general public is the company Tilera, which was founded by professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Anant Agarwal. Tilera is expected to unveil a multi-core processor for embedded systems.
Three IBM Power6 talks to cover various aspects of the project. They are supposed to help understand how the company managed to achieve high energy efficiency of processors while increasing the number of cores and clock speed. Recall that other developers, in particular, Intel, practically abandoned the conquest of high frequencies, focusing their efforts on increasing the number of cores.
Speaking of Intel, one of the talks from this company will be devoted to power management technologies used in the upcoming 45nm Penryn processor.
AMD unveils Griffin, its first laptop processor.
Sun Microsystems’ talk program features Victoria Falls, a Synchronized Cache version of the Niagara2 processor designed for multiprocessor servers.
IBM plans to talk about work on next-generation processor for mainframes.
The topic of T-RAM Semiconductor’s report will be thyristor RAM. It is tipped to be a promising multi-core cache as it combines high DRAM density with SRAM speed.
Several presentations will be related to adaptable processors, including a unique development by Texas Instruments – a DaVinci chip that can encode up to 30 frames per second 720p video in MPEG-4, consuming no more than 0.4W.
