Qimonda Launches Industry First 8GB FB-DIMM DDR2 Quad-Rank 800MHz

Qimonda unveils memory modules that claim to be the first 8GB DDR2 quad-rank FB-DIMMs for multi-core servers up to 800MHz. Prototypes of modules have already been sent to key partners of the company for testing.

The memory components used in the new modules are manufactured at 75nm standards. Qimonda says this has allowed the frequency to be bumped up to 800 MHz and FB-DIMMs designed for the next generation of servers due to hit the market later this year. Modules operating at 800 MHz have a bandwidth of 4.8 Gbps per line, which is 50% more than modules operating at 533 MHz and 20% more than modules operating at at 667 MHz.

In addition to the high bandwidth, an important advantage of the new FB-DIMMs is the reduced power consumption. According to the manufacturer, they consume 45% less electricity than conventional modules. The DDR2 components used by Qimonda operate at 1.5V supply voltage, which is 17% less than today’s standard components (1.8V). At the same time, you do not have to sacrifice performance.

The quad-rank logical organization is implemented using a buffer chip (AMB) developed by Qimonda specialists and manufactured at the company’s facilities. It acts as a kind of switch that directs signal streams to FB-DIMM. The use of quad-rank makes it possible to increase the total amount of memory while maintaining low power consumption.

Qimonda intends to produce 1, 2 and 4 GB 2-rank modules and 2, 4 and 8 GB quad-rank modules.
