Supercomputer Blue Gene / L in Livermore remains the fastest in the world
For the fourth time in a row, the IBM Blue Gene / L system, installed at the largest nuclear research center, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, retained its position as number one in the list of TOP500 Supercomputer Sites, which was updated this week. The latest revision of the list was presented on Wednesday, in Germany, at the International Supercomputing Conference.
Blue Gene / L performance is 280.6 TFLOPS (Trillions of Floating Point Operations Per Second). This indicator allowed the development of IBM to retain the title of the most productive computer system in the world by a huge margin. The second result belongs to the Cray XT4 / XT3 system installed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It is equal to 101.7 TFLOPS. Sandia National Laboratories’ Cray Red Storm Supercomputer Takes Third Place With 101.4 TFLOPS.
Two positions in the top ten belong to systems deployed in Europe. This is an IBM supercomputer from the Spanish Barcelona Supercomputing Center and an SGI system from the German Leibniz Rechenzentrum.
As before, the list is clearly dominated by IBM. Of the top 10 positions – six, and of the top 100 – 46 belong to the products of this company. The total performance of the listed IBM systems is 42% of the total performance of all systems on the list – more than any other supercomputer manufacturer in the world.
The IBM Blue Gene / P supercomputer, which we recently talked about, took position at number 30. Dual-rack test system delivers 20.86 TFLOPS. Recall, according to IBM, a full-scale Blue Gene / P system can reach the three PFLOPS mark.
