Google intends to participate in the FCC auction for the right to use radio frequencies

Just over a month and a half ago, Google announced its plans to work in the mobile market, announcing that the company plans to focus on creating software for mobile devices.

The company decided not to stop there and announced that it intends to take part in the FCC auction for the right to use radio frequencies in the 700 MHz range to create a wireless network.

When filing with the FCC, Google asks the Commission to accept certain auction rules as an integral part of the auction regardless of who wins:

  • “Open” applications: consumers should be able to download and use any software, content or services as they wish;
  • “Open” devices: consumers should be able to use any portable handheld communication device on any wireless network they prefer;
  • “Open” services: third parties (partners) should be able to purchase wireless services from the 700 MHz license holder in bulk on reasonable non-discriminatory commercial terms;
  • “Open” networks: third parties (eg ISPs) must be able to connect anywhere on the licensee’s 700 MHz wireless network.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt says it will help meet consumer interests.

Subject to all four conditions, Google will commit at least 4.6 billion. dollars to participate in this auction.
