AMD CTO compares Fusion to Intel 486 processor

Phil Hester, AMD’s Technology Leader, attended the Hot Chips conference, where he spoke about the company’s plans for Fusion, a product that will integrate the CPU and GPU into a single unit.

Fusion’s 2021 market launch, according to Ester, will coincide with the explosive demand for a cost-effective yet powerful solution to meet the demands of video and 3D PC applications.

According to Ester, “It’s not about silicon, it’s about applications.”. Speaking of Fusion, he drew a parallel with Intel’s decision to integrate a floating point processor into a 486 processor. According to the person who heads AMD’s technology side, integrating something new into a processor that was previously available separately always comes at a cost and compromises. But when a lot of applications demand this new, in this case, increased performance, integration is justified, since it brings significant returns.

This, in short, is the main idea of Fusion. It will not replace high-end discrete graphics solutions, nor will it become a performance leader among processors. But, according to AMD, GPU and CPU integration will become vital by the end of the decade, as a very large number of applications, such as games and video, will rely on GPU architecture, the relative performance of which, in some cases, is already higher than that of Cpu.

Historically, GPUs and CPUs have been designed with different priorities. In particular, GPUs are strong in parallel processing, which has become a tricky issue for today’s multi-core processors. In turn, the CPUs are optimized for sequential processing. There is a distinct advantage to combining the two types of processors in one product, if AMD can convince the software developers of this, Esther said.

However, AMD still has many decisions to make. For example, what memory should PCs with Fusion use?? This is an important question since the memory controller is built into AMD processors. How to “open up” the GPU so that as many applications as possible can take advantage of parallel processing? All product details are not ready yet, but AMD is working on it.

It doesn’t make sense to integrate everything into one chip, but you can try with something, said Esther. The company has about two more years to answer all questions.
