Ecma standardizes 100 and 200 GB holographic disks
Ecma International, formed in 1961 to standardize communications equipment and consumer electronics solutions, announced the standardization of Holographic Information Storage. The two new standards literally break through the limitations inherent in modern optical media, where, unlike holographic technology, recording is not carried out in volume, but on the flat surface of information layers.
The first standard was named ECMA-377 “Information Interchange on Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) Recordable Cartridges – Capacity: 200 Gbytes per Cartridge”, the second – ECMA-378 “Information Interchange on Read-Only Memory Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD-ROM) – Capacity: 100 Gbytes per disk “.
According to the specifications, one HVD can store up to 200GB of information, which is roughly equal to 42 single layer DVDs. In the future, the volume of HVD is expected to be further increased and will exceed 1.3 TB. Unlike modern optical media, where reading and writing are performed sequentially, HVD manipulates fairly large portions at once – one laser flash allows you to read or write about 10 Kbit of data in parallel.
