SSE5: AMD Expands the x86 Instruction Set to Improve Processor Performance
The new SSE5 instruction set continues AMD’s x86 architecture innovations, including 3DNow!, AMD x86-64 Architecture, AMD Virtualization and Light-Weight Profiling Specification.
AMD today announced a new x86 enhancement, an Instruction Set Extension, designated SSE5. It is claimed to allow software developers to simplify code and achieve greater efficiency in the most demanding applications. Importantly, the SSE5 extension is focused on increasing performance in everyday tasks, including high performance computing, media and security.
The company has already opened the SSE5 specifications and is ready for dialogue with software developers. Pre-market engagement with the developer community is a hallmark of AMD’s approach to innovation, ensuring rapid adoption by the industry. Suffice it to recall the early release of AMD Virtualization specifications in 2021 (then codenamed Pacifica), or the recent publication of the Light-Weight Profiling specifications, which are expected to help leverage the benefits of multitasking. By providing broad access to SSE5, AMD is following the philosophy of open collaboration – a model that allowed 64-bit computing on the x86 platform to be quickly adopted by the masses.
The purpose of SSE5 is to increase the impact of each command execution and to bring to the x86 platform functionality previously available only in specialized, high-performance architectures.
In particular, we are talking about instructions with three operands. By increasing the number of operands of mathematical and logical functions from two to three, SSE5 allows you to consolidate several simple instructions into one, more efficient. This feature is currently available only on some RISC architectures.
Another innovation is Fused Multiply Accumulate. With instructions that manipulate three operands, you can easily implement a set of instructions for complex calculations. Fused Multiply Accumulate combines multiplication and addition, which reduces iterative computation to a single instruction. Simplifying code and speeding up computations is expected to allow for more realistic graphics and surround sound, and increase the speed of operations with complex vectors.
SSE5 specifications will be implemented in products based on the next generation core (Bulldozer), which will hit the market in 2021.
