Display prototype that reconfigures itself for easy viewing
In order to achieve interactivity and ease of management, it was developed
many interesting monitors, but the prototype developed by Wayne Cheng
and Chih-Nan Wu in Taiwan (at National Chiao Tung University jointly
with Photonics and Display Institute) allows the display to change depending on
where the browser is located.
Due to the fact that the screen itself reconfigures the user does not have to
see a blurry and fuzzy picture, as is the case with cheap LCD screens with
small viewing angles.
This effect is achieved by tracking with a miniature camera
the position of the user and the corresponding software that allows
reorient the liquid crystals of the display, and also change the wattage of each
emitting diode. As a result, the brightness and contrast change, the picture
always remains clear and sharp, moreover, “turned” towards the viewer.
LCDs are ubiquitous, but their designers believe that
the screen will always or almost always look straight ahead, and not at any angle.
However, screens, such as those mounted in video cameras, are often looked at under
an angle of 40 degrees vertically and 20 degrees horizontally. This circumstance
makes its own “adjustments” to the picture that the user sees at the same time. therefore
in such cases it would be nice to be able to adjust the screen without moving and
without turning it physically.
According to the researchers involved in this project, testing of a prototype display
were successful and the technology looks promising. At the moment it is planned
to simplify and reduce the cost of such a display through the use of IR sensors. IN
eventually, IR sensors will be easier and cheaper to integrate into small
custom electronics screens.
So far, the only drawback of this approach is the fact that
technology developed by Chinese researchers is optimized
for one user only. Soon, probably doctors and surgeons using
LCD screens in their work will be the first to appreciate the benefits of the new technology.
