ARM and Intrinsity want to double the performance of Cortex-R4 processors
ARM-Intrinsity agreement announced a few days ago could be a significant milestone in the fate of the ARM Cortex processor family. The first result of the joint work should be the release of Cortex-R4 processors operating at a frequency of about twice the frequency achievable using standard synthesis tools with the same technical process.
To achieve this result, new processor implementations will use Intrinsity Fast14 1-of-N Domino Logic (NDL) technology, which allows to increase circuit performance while maintaining power consumption and die area. “Accelerated” implementations of ARM Cortex-R4X processors are expected to improve endpoint performance without increasing cost. We are talking about mass devices, in electronics of which ARM cores are used: hard drives, printers, network equipment.
Cortex-R4X implementations will inherit all the virtues of the popular Cortex-R4 product. In particular, this concerns an extremely flexible memory architecture that provides for the implementation of tightly coupled memory (TCM) within a single logical address space, which provides performance comparable to the speed of cache memory. Support for direct access (DMA) to TCM expands the use of this memory as shared buffers and storage of data streams. In addition, all Cortex-R4 versions support Error Correcting Memory (ECC) memory.
