Sealevel Systems: tests confirmed the advantages of the “dedicated USB UART” architecture

Sealevel Systems, which develops solutions for increasing the number of serial ports, conducted comparative testing of several products, the results of which showed the advantages of the “dedicated USB UART” architecture developed by the company’s specialists.

According to a company representative – and this is evident in the illustration – the difference in performance was striking. What are the features of the mentioned architecture that allowed products based on it to demonstrate such an impressive performance??

In short, all existing solutions that allow you to connect multiple serial ports to the USB bus boil down to one of two schemes. The first of them uses the concept of “shared throughput”, the second uses dedicated transceivers (“dedicated USB UART”). It is this architectural difference that is key to the performance of end products.

In the case of “shared throughput”, the multiport adapter uses a USB microcontroller and one FPGA chip connected to several serial ports. The bottleneck of this architecture is that all serial ports share the bandwidth of one microcontroller. Another disadvantage is that the data transfer is not in a continuous stream, but in portions. This causes a significant decrease in the communication speed – the actual speed is noticeably below the theoretical limit.

With a dedicated USB UART, each port has a dedicated universal asynchronous transceiver (UART) at its disposal, eliminating performance degradation issues. Basically, a “dedicated USB UART” device is equivalent to connecting multiple single port adapters to a USB host. In this case, each port operates at the highest possible speed, Sealevel Systems says.
