Analog Devices uses MEMS technology in ADIS16355 motion sensor
Global positioning technology using satellites (GPS) is part of a very large number of processes in the modern world, at least this is true for technically developed countries. With the help of GPS, emergency services choose the shortest path, moving to the place where their participation is required; sailors determine their coordinates and plot a course; marine archaeologists find a way to sunken ships; travelers adhere to the chosen route. Analog Devices’ Inertial Motion Sensor can compensate for GPS loss or vehicle-induced errors. It is designed for use in systems installed on board aircraft, ships, land vehicles, agricultural equipment.
The product, designated ADIS16355, is based on the long-term name iMEMS Motion Signal Processing Technology. By providing data on movement in space for analysis, the sensor allows the use of dead reckoning techniques previously available only to aerospace and military systems. This became possible because the cost of the sensor was reduced by an order of magnitude due to the use of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology.
By accurately capturing the slightest deviations in linear acceleration and angles, the ADIS16355 allows the navigation system to track the position of the vehicle until GPS signal reception is restored.
In addition to navigation systems, the ADIS16355 sensor can be useful in other cases when it is necessary to have information about the movement of objects in space. For example, the ADIS16355 can stabilize the position of cameras when filming; control industrial manipulators; make better limb prostheses.
Structurally, the ADIS16355 is a multi-axis motion sensor that combines gyroscopes and accelerometers that capture movements in all six possible degrees of freedom (6DOF): linear movement along the X, Y, and Z axes, and rotation around the X, Y, and Z axes. An important feature of the ADIS16355 is the lack of calibration and a programmable interface. Temperature stability of readings is 0.005 degrees of angle per second with a temperature change of one degree Celsius. In terms of accuracy, the company claims, the new sensors are 50 times more accurate than other products for this purpose. The sensor is very compact (23 x 23 x 23 mm), which makes it suitable for portable equipment.
In other words, it looks like the ADIS16355’s only drawback is its price tag – $ 359 apiece. Slightly cheaper – $ 275 – costs a modification of the ADIS16350, which is suitable for indoor use only in terms of operating temperature range.
