Magnets help improve OLED efficiency by a third

One of the priority criteria in the development of displays for mobile electronics is the coefficient of performance (COP), which can be expressed as the brightness of the glow per energy consumption. Needless to say, a bright, battery-efficient display is a dream come true for users of cell phones, digital cameras, PDAs and other portable electronic devices.

Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory claim they were able to increase OLED efficiency by 30% by doping OLED materials with magnetic nanoparticles. An additional positive effect of making these materials magnetic is the ability to control the brightness of the glow without adding electrical contacts to the LEDs.

Conventional OLEDs are non-magnetic. To create pairs “electron-hole”, the recombination of which is accompanied by the emission of photons, they use an electric field. By adding magnetic nanoparticles (at a concentration of no more than 0.1%) to the polymer matrix, scientists were able to increase the efficiency of OLED by 27%. By applying an external magnetic field to the obtained organic light-emitting diodes, it was possible to obtain another 5%, which, as a result, gave a total increase in efficiency by 32% compared to conventional OLEDs. Cobalt and iron were used as materials for nanoparticles.

At the next stage of work, the researchers plan to experiment with the amount of impurity and methods of mixing nanoparticles and polymers in order to obtain the most homogeneous mixture, which is expected to further improve the result.
