GreenPower – WD’s new low-power hard drives
Western Digital (WD) Announces GreenPower Family of Hard Disk Drives. It includes models for desktop systems, corporate equipment, consumer electronics devices and external storage. The volume of new products – from 320 GB to 1 TB. The manufacturer calls a distinctive feature of the products low energy consumption – according to the company, savings can reach up to 40%.
WD GreenPower drives come in 3.5-inch size. The first in the family will be the WD Caviar GP series. The 1GB model will be available starting this month as part of My Book external drives and as a standalone product starting in August. In the third quarter, it will be joined by GreenPower models of the WD RE and WD AV series, intended for the corporate and consumer sectors, respectively.
According to the company, the typical consumption of a 1TB hard drive is 13.5W. Consumption of comparable WD GreenPower 5W less. This allows you to significantly reduce heat generation and operating costs of storage devices.
The energy efficiency of the new family is ensured by the use of several WD developments:
- IntelliPower – Precise balance of rotational speed, transfer rate and cache size for the optimal balance between power consumption and performance;
- IntelliPark – Reducing energy consumption by reducing aerodynamic drag, achieved by moving the heads away from the disk surface during periods of drive idle time;
- IntelliSeek – calculates optimal search head speeds to reduce power consumption, noise and vibration.
