Japanese humanoid robot is not afraid of sand and rain, and in the future can learn to drive cars
The HRP-3 Promet Mk-II robot walked over a sandy surface and held its hands under the stream of water during a press presentation at the Kawada Industry laboratory near Tokyo. The moment the company unveiled its next-generation humanoid robot, Japan is one step closer to creating the perfect worker who won’t complain about pouring rain and slippery floors.
The HRP-3 Promet Mk-II robot, jointly created by Kawada Industries, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), is a humanoid structure 160 cm high. Robot weight – 68 kilograms including battery weight. The first prototype of the robot was shown almost two years ago.
“We have taken a significant step forward in creating a humanoid that works in a real environment,” – said in a joint statement on the presentation.
During the demonstration of its capabilities, the robot used a screwdriver, holding it with its right hand, and at the same time using its left hand to maintain stability – just like a human would do in such a situation.
“Our country is aging rapidly and the task of creating a robot capable of performing the operations that are now entrusted to humans is urgent,” – another quote from the statement.
Kawada Industries hopes to bring HRP-3 Promet Mk-II to commercial operation. As expected, the first customers willing to pay 120 thousand. dollars for one robot, will appear before 2021. At this point, the developers expect to complement the functionality of the HRP-3 Promet Mk-II with other capabilities demanded on construction sites – for example, they want to teach a robot to drive construction vehicles.
