Scientists have taught robots to walk on water

Robot creators continue to borrow ideas from wildlife. Yesterday we talked about robots jumping like grasshoppers, and today we will talk about robots running on water like other insects – water striders.

As you know, water striders cannot swim, but they do not need it – they move along the surface of the water, like skaters on ice.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University tried to replicate the ability of a water strider in a mechanical design. Their brainchild, like an insect, glides on the water surface, using the force of surface tension, and inherits exceptional maneuverability from its prototype. This makes the robotic water strider compares favorably with traditional water vehicles that rely on buoyancy.

The robot was named STRIDE (Surface Tension Robotic Insect Dynamic Explorer). In the photo he is shown on the right, on the left – an ordinary water strider. Robot weight – one gram, maximum load – 9.3 grams. Letters indicate: A, B, C, D – support legs; E and F – motor legs; G – torso with electronics and power supply; H – middle drive; I and J – right and left drives. The ends of the legs of the robot are covered with a hydrophobic material, which is Teflon, the actuators are piezoelectric. Since piezoelectric elements have a small amplitude of motion, the resonance effect is used to increase it. The movement speed of the robot is 3 cm / s (for comparison, a live water strider glides through the water at a speed of 150 cm / s).

So far, the main danger for STRIDE is water agitation. However, scientists are full of hopes for improving the robot, in order to increase its stability and speed of movement. In particular, the second prototype uses microscopic motors. Although the weight of the robot itself increased to 6 grams, the speed was raised to 8.7 cm.

Among the practical applications of robots that can run on water are environmental monitoring, educational and entertainment programs.

Designed by Professor Metin Sitti and his assistant Yun Seong Song. By the way, in April last year, Sitty already demonstrated a robot called the Water Runner that can move on water.
