STMicroelectronics and IBM will work together to master 32, 22 nm standards… and less
STMicroelectronics (ST) and IBM announced a collaboration agreement to develop a next-generation semiconductor manufacturing process.
The agreement covers the development of 32nm and 22nm CMOS process technology for production using wafers with a diameter of 300 mm. In addition to the main variant of the CMOS process technology, it is planned to create derivative technologies for the production of single-chip systems (System-on-Chip, SoC). In addition, the agreement between IBM and ST covers the joint development of intellectual property objects (topography of integrated circuits) designed for use in products manufactured under the 32 and 22 nm standards.
As part of the agreement, the companies will exchange specially created development teams. So, on the development of the CMOS process, ST researchers will work on the premises of the corresponding IBM (Semiconductor Research and Development Center) in the state of New York. Simultaneously, a team of IBM specialists will be sent to the ST factory in France, where the partners will focus their efforts on the creation of derivative technologies such as the release of embedded memory, analog and RF circuits.
In this way, STMicroelectronics will join a six-company semiconductor and technology development partnership led by IBM. By participating in an open ecosystem, which is entrusted with the function of sharing the resources of participants, the companies involved in this alliance receive significant benefits – the speed of technology development is increased and costs are reduced.
The jointly created process technology will be mass-produced at the aforementioned ST factory and 300mm production facilities of companies participating in the Common Platform program, including IBM.
In the long term, IBM, CEA-LETI and ST are expected to work together on mastering and finer process standards.
Financial details of the agreement remained undisclosed.
