Sanmina-SCI launches the world’s first fully ESD protected PCBs
Sanmina-SCI Corporation and Shocking Technologies, a developer of dielectric materials, have announced the launch of printed circuit boards (PCBs) with built-in ESD protection that protects 100% of the components mounted on the board.
The development was carried out jointly by employees of Sanmina-SCI PCB Division, their colleagues from the subsidiary of Sanmina-SCI – Viking InterWorks, and specialists from Shocking Technologies. Viking VLP (Very Low Profile) DDR2 memory modules were the first products manufactured using Sanmina-SCI’s proprietary eESD technology. Tests have shown a significant improvement in damage resistance of ESD-sensitive memory components located on the PCB. Multiple discharges (voltage 6000 V), directly applied to the modules, did not lead to any damage or deterioration of their performance. The specified value corresponds to an increase in the previously achieved level of protection by 200%.
At the heart of the Sanmina-SCI eESD technology is the use of a thin layer of proprietary Xstatic material next to the ground layer inside the PCB. According to the representative of Shocking Technologies, which developed the material, it is “programmed” to switch from a pure dielectric state to an excellent conductor state under the action of a high-voltage discharge. After a short-term dissipation of ESD into a grounded conductor, the layer returns to its original state – the whole process takes less than one nanosecond.
Material properties allow eESD technology to be applied in a wide variety of designs, including flexible PCBs and chip substrates. It is assumed that the use of the development will significantly increase the resistance to static discharges of products such as Smart Memory cards, cell phones, PDAs and other handheld electronic devices.
