According to supercomputer maker Cray, two of its creations have entered the most prestigious, top-of-the-fastest systems in the world, breaking the performance mark of 100 TFLOPS (trillions of floating point operations per second). The corresponding results are recorded in the regularly updated TOP500 Supercomputer Sites list. Two Cray systems, one at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the other at Sandia National Laboratories, ranked second and third in the revised list, published earlier this month, respectively.
The company emphasizes that the features of the architecture of the Cray XT, which underlie both systems, allow for repeated upgrades of supercomputers. This gives customers the opportunity to effectively spend money on computing: gradual infusions allow supercomputers to reach new levels of performance without the need to switch to completely new equipment.
The Cray XT4 supercomputer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, codenamed Jaguar, is the most powerful computing system available for open scientific research. As a result of a recent upgrade, its performance has almost doubled – from 54 TFLOPS to 101.7 TFLOPS. At least one more major upgrade is planned for the future, which is expected to double the computer’s performance again.
The third most powerful supercomputer in the world, Sandia’s Cray XT3, known as Red Storm, surpassed the 100 TFLOPS mark last fall.
At the heart of the Cray XT3 / XT4 are the so-called processor elements built on AMD Opteron processors, the maximum number of which, due to high scalability, can be up to 30,000 pieces.
