Panasonic has improved bass reproduction with compact loudspeakers

Panasonic (Matsushita) claims it has developed a technology that can improve the reproduction of the low-frequency region of the audio spectrum in small loudspeakers. The development, called the Nano Bass Exciter, is now in the patenting phase.

The new technology is based on the placement of a porous carbon material inside the loudspeaker cabinet. The company emphasizes that this technique is suitable for small loudspeakers, including thin loudspeakers commonly used in mobile devices, in particular in cell phones.

Said porous material has nanometer-sized voids that allow influencing the concentration of air molecules inside the loudspeaker. When low frequency sound is reproduced, the large vibration amplitude of the cone instantly increases the pressure inside the loudspeaker cabinet. The Nano Bass Exciter physically absorbs air molecules, and reduces air pressure, allowing the diffuser to move freely. As a result, the manufacturer claims, it is possible to improve the quality of the reproduced sound.

Nano Bass Exciter estimates that the Nano Bass Exciter doubles bass response compared to conventional Panasonic speakers.
