First WirelessHD Specification Formulated
A group of proponents of the new wireless technology WirelessHD, which was first discussed at the end of last year, has formulated the final version of the proposed specifications for devices using the 60 GHz frequency range and designed to communicate over short distances with high bandwidth. These specifications, along with a list of member companies of the group, are expected to be published within the next two months.
This information was obtained from representatives of SiBeam, a start-up company set up to develop CMOS chips for the new technology. WirelessHD specifications were expected back this spring, but their formulation had to be postponed.
SiBeam has already demonstrated a working prototype of a 60 GHz transmitter that provides a video stream of 1920 x 1080 (1080p) at a distance of more than 10 m. The prototype is built on the basis of FPGA (programmable gate array), but in the future it is expected to be implemented in the form of an ASIC design.
The 60 GHz technology specification defines two types of network operating in tandem. A multi-Gbps primary network uses directional radiation (to minimize energy loss in electromagnetic radiation). The role of the secondary network, using radiation propagating in all directions, is reduced to finding and establishing contact with compatible devices in range. The secondary network also uses the 60 GHz band, which is expected to have minimal impact on existing wireless networks.
In conclusion, it should be noted that SiBeam intends to profit mainly from the sale of its own 60 GHz CMOS chips, produced under contract by companies specializing in this direction. License fees for the use of technology are planned to be made “modest or negligible”. The first SiBeam OmniLink60 products are expected to be announced no later than CES (Consumer Electronics Show) next January.
