Seagate may soon be Chinese

According to the New York Times, the keen interest of one of the largest Chinese IT companies in the American hard drive manufacturer raises concerns of the US government authorities in connection with the outflow of high technologies to China.

William Watkins, president of Seagate Technology, one of two American companies operating in this market (the second is Western Digital, whose headquarters is located in California), clarified the situation in an interview. He confirmed that the information may relate to his company, but refused to disclose the name of the potential buyer.

Watkins said his company is not up for sale, but the very high price offered by potential buyers for Seagate shares could tip the scales in favor of a sale.

The US authorities are worried that if Seagate is sold, there may be additional risks to the safety of information on drives with hardware-based data encryption, whose production has been established by the manufacturer only recently.

However, the recent history of the industry has already seen an example of such a deal. At one time, IBM’s sale of its laptop division to the Chinese Lenovo had a considerable resonance.
