Toshiba showed a prototype DTR hard drive with record density – 120 GB on a 1.8-inch platter
Toshiba announced the creation of a prototype hard disk drive that uses Discrete Track Recording (DTR) technology to increase the amount of information recorded on a single 1.8-inch platter to a record 120 GB. The drive, which uses traditional technology, stores 80 GB on one platter of this size (in the picture it is on the left, the prototype is on the right). The prototype was the first product in the world to use DTR. It was the application of this technology that led to an increase in the density of perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) by 50%. Toshiba plans to roll out serial production of drives using DTR in 2021.
The information storage density indicator achieved in the prototype was 516 Mbit / sq.mm.
The main distinguishing feature of drives with DTR is the presence of a special “groove” between the tracks of the PMR carrier. It reduces interference from adjacent tracks, which makes it possible to place tracks closer to each other. In the diagram, the surface of a conventional carrier is shown on the left, DTR – on the right. The magnetic head is shown in red.
The process of forming the DTR track is easiest to apply to miniature media, such as those used in hard drives of the 1.8 and 2.5 inch form factor.
Miniature hard drives are widely used in mobile PCs, players, camcorders and navigators.
The DTR technology uses an electron-beam lithography unit created as part of the Japanese national project “Nanometer-Scale Optical High Density Disk Storage System” supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
