Japanese corporation Sony announced the commercialization of another development in the field of image sensors manufactured using CMOS technology. The novelty, designated IMX021, is, according to the manufacturer, an APS-C size sensor (diagonal size 28.4 mm / Type 1.8) with the highest resolution in the industry today – 12.47 million pixels (effective). Another feature of the sensor is high speed. The product is intended for use in digital SLR cameras.

One of the strengths of CMOS technology is its integration potential, allowing digital and analog circuits to be placed on a single chip. In the case of the IMX021, the company used this advantage in addition to a new development – “Column-Parallel A / D Conversion Technique”, the essence of which is that each column of photosensitive elements of the matrix received its own analog-to-digital converter.

This made it possible to transmit analog signals from the vertical lines of the sensor directly to the converters, along the shortest path. Thus, image degradation caused by noise in analog circuits is minimized, and at the same time, a very high conversion speed is achieved (in the scan mode of the entire matrix) – 10.39 frames per second (in 12-bit representation). Moreover, since the processing is performed in parallel, the conversion of even a large number of pixels can be performed at significantly lower frequencies than usual. This helps to reduce noise on digital circuits. Each column of the matrix is ​​equipped with CDS (Correlated Double Sampling) circuits, which also reduces noise.
