Blazar is the first 40G active optical cable and the world’s first CMOS fiber optic device
Silicon Photonics, Luxtera, has announced the industry’s first 40-Gigabit (40G) active fiber optic cable (OAC) called Blazar. “Concurrently”, the cable became the world’s first fiber optic device manufactured using CMOS technology (CMOS Photonics). Blazar cable combines the advantages of optical modules and copper cables to provide a cost-effective high-bandwidth connection. The use of CMOS Photonics technology in Luxtera’s first commercial product is said to have “overcome the price barrier” by offering a 40G solution at a price similar to that of a 20G solution.
The novelty is intended for interconnection in high-performance systems, where InfiniBand and 40G closed solutions developed by equipment manufacturers are currently used. With support for Quad Data Rate (QDR), wide bandwidth and long range (up to 300m), OAC overcomes the inherent disadvantages of InfiniBand that limit the use of this technology to small clusters. Application examples include: InfiniBand Connectivity SDR / DDR / QDR, 10/40 Gigabit Ethernet, 2/4/8/10 Gbps Fiber Channel, Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN), Storage Area Network (SAN), 2.5G / 5G PCI-Express Extension, Storage Arrays and Test Hardware.
The use of Blazar, according to the manufacturer, will simplify the requirements for the placement of computers included in the cluster, will increase the density of installation of servers and switching equipment in racks. Separately, the low specific power consumption of the OAC, equipped with reinforced end connectors Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable (QSFP) MSA, is noted, which does not exceed 0.05 W per gigabit of throughput.
The key to achieving high performance is a clever design where fiber optic cables are rigidly bonded to transceivers powered by a single hermetically sealed laser. As a result, installation and maintenance times and costs are significantly reduced, and connection reliability is increased.
Luxtera plans to begin deliveries of Blazar OAC prototypes ranging from one to 300 meters in length in the fourth quarter, with serial production to begin in 2021.
