Lidar helped a robot created by the German military to win the European Land Robot Trial
The European Land Robot Trial, reminiscent of the DARPA Grand Challenge robot car race, sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), was won by a robot created by specialists from the University of the German Armed Forces (Universitaet der Bundeswehr). Compared to the DARPA Grand Challenge, the European competition requires more autonomy from robots, the source claims, citing event participants.
The base for the robot, built by the German military, was the Volkswagen Tuareg. By the way, a robot on the same chassis won the DARPA Grand Challenge last year. Differences in vehicle equipment were dictated by differences in racing conditions. In the case of the DARPA Grand Challenge, robots move along a route marked by points with specified coordinates, which they receive using GPS, and according to the terms of the European Land Robot Trial, cars should not rely on satellite navigation data.
Although the distance is only eight kilometers (in the case of the Grand Challenge, more than 200 kilometers), the level of difficulty is impressive: the robot had to find its way, relying mainly on image processing. The images taken by the camera complemented the data of the lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) – a system for detecting obstacles and measuring distances using a laser, and information from 64 sensors. This made it possible to successfully identify obstacles such as trees, rocks and people. At ten full revolutions per minute, the lidar produced a one million pixel image that was used to form a 3D model of the environment. In addition, the robot analyzed the information provided by the road signs.
As a result, the robot made about 90% of the way independently, although in critical sections of the route the operators had to take control.
According to experts, robotic cars may appear on public roads within the next 15-20 years.
