Intel strengthens its position in manufacturing and R&D, and will remain the industry leader, according to In-Stat

Intel takes advantage of the timely release of the next generation of PC processors to strengthen its position in manufacturing and R&D. This is the conclusion reached by In-Stat analysts after analyzing the company’s position on the market.

At the end of this year, Intel expects to begin the transition to a 45nm process technology using high dielectric constant (high-k) insulators and metal gates. Intel will look for ways to further improve semiconductor manufacturing, observers say, and will offer new technology for 32nm by 2021. In addition, adds In-Stat, it is highly likely that the company will acquire a new “set” of modernized and newly built factories.

“In-Stat is confident that Intel will remain the technology leader and largest semiconductor manufacturer for the foreseeable future, thanks to continued investment in technology and manufacturing,” concluded the study, Jim McGergor, analyst at In-Stat. “By 2021, there will likely be only five to ten major manufacturers to build their own factories, and fewer than five different workflows as the industry grows more reliance on collaborative efforts and partnerships.”.

In the In-Stat study, the following points stand out:

  • Intel’s expansion slowed after a jump to 300mm platters and an initial ramp-up in dual-core CPUs;
  • Intel now has enough capacity to handle 200mm and 300mm platters to meet expected demand for microprocessors, chipsets, and other related products;
  • After several years of increase, Intel’s manufacturing (manufacturing) costs should start to decline in 2021.
