IBM Blue Gene / P Supercomputer Begins the Petaflop Era (PFLOPS)?

IBM specialists have developed a new model of the Blue Gene family of supercomputers – the Blue Gene / P model, which is reportedly capable of performing 1-3 quadrillion operations per second,
or 1-3 petaflops (PFLOPS). To achieve 1 petaflops in Blue Gene / P, 294912 processors are installed, and to get 3 petaflops, 884736 processors are required. The machine is designed to operate under constant load with 1 petaflops of computing power (with fewer nodes involved). This is about 100 thousand. times the power of an average home PC.

Blue Gene / P is a big step forward for IBM in building supercomputers. Blue Gene / L was included in the list of the most powerful supercomputers (Top 500) with its “modest” 280 teraflops (TFLOPS).
The novelty clearly claims to be included in the above list.

US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory to begin using the first Blue Gene / P computer later this year. In addition to her, by the end of 2021, the same car will be at their disposal: the Forschungszentrum Julich research center in Germany and the Max Planck Society there.

Blue Gene / P has a modular architecture, consists of several server racks (from one to 72). According to
the specification listed on the company’s website pages, this supercomputer can have up to 294,912 cores at 73728 nodes. One cluster (multiple racks) typically contains 512-1024 nodes. Thanks to its Blue Gene / P layout
refers to HPC (High Performance Computer) with a high degree of reliability and low maintenance. Components (850MHz PowerPC 450 processors and up to 2GB memory per node) and connections are extremely “stacked”tightly.

In addition to very good scalability in terms of performance, the Blue Gene / P also claims to be the most energy efficient supercomputer. However, for the Blue Gene series, this is already almost a tradition. On the other hand, the 2.9 MW required to achieve 1 petaflops would power approximately 2,900 homes. Peak power (3 PFLOPS) would require 8.7 MW of power.

The supercomputer will run Linux. This environment will run the same applications as Blue Gene / L,
which are written in Fortran, C and C languages++. As before, these are resource-intensive tasks
biology, physics and chemistry, astrophysics, genetics and others.
