Intel joins $ 100 laptop project

On July 13, Intel and the creators of One Laptop per Child (OLPC, also known as XO and CM1) announced that they will join forces to bring affordable computers to children in Third World countries.

Cooperation will concern both hardware and software parts of the OLPC platform.

Details about the signed agreement are still a mystery – the press release is not very informative.

Recall that the AMD Geode processor was chosen for OLPC, so we can hardly talk about the supply of components of this kind. At the same time, Intel is also engaged in the production of wireless modules, solid-state drives, – perhaps they can be part of the $ 100 laptops, which Quanta should start production in the near future?

This announcement seems doubly strange also because Intel is interested in promoting at least two competing projects – Classmate PC and ASUS Eee PC 701.

We think the situation should clear up in the near future.
