Corning Incorporated has announced the development of a new fiber-optic technology that claims to solve a long-standing problem faced by telecommunications service providers deploying fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks.
Corning’s development is based on a special optical fiber structure called nanoStructures. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that the fiber-optic cable becomes very, very flexible – so much so that it is possible to form corners of a small radius of rounding from it without negative consequences for the signal level. This gives providers a cost-effective way to run high-speed Internet, voice and HDTV connections in any location. Existing fiber optic cables deteriorate if they have to bend around corners when laying inside a building. Therefore, laying an FTTH channel is often irrational from a technical and economic point of view.
According to the apt expression of the head of Corning, Peter F. Volanakis, new technology changes the rules of the game: “We have developed a fiber optic cable that is as strong as copper, but has all the advantages of fiber in terms of bandwidth.”.
