The new Spansion flash memory is designed specifically for low-cost phones in Russia, China and India
Spansion, the largest flash-only company, today announced the launch of its new NOR VS family of products targeting original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) making entry-level cell phones for high-growth markets. Markets of Russia, China and India are named as examples.
Entry-level telephones for emerging markets typically range from basic phones with voice as their primary function, to devices with a low-resolution camera, color screen, and 2D gaming. The Spansion NOR VS family, which includes products from 16 Mbps to 64 Mbps, with a 30% smaller die area than usual, will allow OEMs to create low-cost and, at the same time, better equipped models than the previous generation.
The new memory is rated for 1.8 V supply voltage and supports frequencies up to 104 MHz. An important advantage of NOR VS is compatibility with existing solutions in the field of interfaces, chipsets, layouts and commands. In addition, there is an easy way to migrate to more advanced product families that use MirrorBit technology, which opens up the opportunity for phone manufacturers to quickly bring more functional products to market.
32 Mbps Spansion NOR VS trial samples are currently available. Chips with a density of 16 and 64 Mbit will appear in the current month, but later. Mass production is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter.
