Freescale New Products Help Implement Touch User Interfaces in Electronic Devices

Touch-sensitive sensors are gaining popularity as a replacement for traditional mechanical buttons. Freescale Semiconductor, sensor development company, unveils two highly responsive touch panel user interfaces.

Capacitive sensors MPR081 and MPR082 are able to record user actions, reacting to changes in capacitance. Home appliances, cell phones, MP3 players, PC peripherals and remote controls are among the main areas of application of the new products. Replacing buttons with sensors, the manufacturer claims, makes it possible to reduce the cost of products, make them easier and more intuitive to operate.

The difference between the presented products is that the MPR081 is designed for round-shaped (16-position) controls, typical of, say, MP3 players, while the MPR082 is for classic rectangular pads (up to 20 pieces.). However, new items are completely interchangeable, which opens up space for manufacturers to modify devices at a minimum cost. Using MPR081 and MPR082, you can implement such interface elements as “sliders”, switches, sets of buttons, touch pads. Since the sensors have a digital I2C interface, they easily interface with processors. The sensors can be selected between 1.8V and 3.6V, so they are well suited for battery-powered devices. An interesting feature of the microcircuits is the presence of an output at which a signal appears intended for the loudspeaker – thus, the sensors allow organizing acoustic feedback: by “pressing” the sensor, the user hears the reaction of the device.

  • Protection against false positives;
  • Operating temperature range – from -40 ° C to + 85 ° C;
