A comprehensive strategy for improving semiconductor manufacturing using 300mm wafers and preparing the transition to 450mm wafers was published this week by the International SEMATECH Manufacturing Initiative (ISMI is a subsidiary of SEMATECH).

Expanding on the details of the first announcement on this topic a few days ago gives a clearer picture of the industry’s projected path.

ISMI plans to focus on its existing 300mmPrime program, which aims to increase productivity and reduce cycle times. In parallel, a program will be promoted to prepare the industry’s transition to 450nm wafers in order to reduce overall production costs. ISMI Director Scott Kramer said both programs take compatibility issues into account – most of the cycle-time improvements being developed under the 300mmPrime program are expected to be useful in 450mm production as well.

According to Kramer, the dual strategy reflects differences in the needs of ISMI member companies. On the one hand, there is interest in improving 300mm production, and on the other hand, the issue of creating an industry infrastructure for processing larger diameter wafers is on the agenda.

Tom Abel, head of the 450mm program, said the ISMI solution is based on nine months of intensive simulation that has dynamically recreated a full-scale picture of more than 130 factories. These efforts made it possible to understand whether only the improvements expected from the 300mmPrime program would achieve the goals of ISMI: a 30% reduction in production costs per wafer area and a 50% reduction in cycle time.

Abel noted that the revised 300mmPrime program will focus on areas with the greatest potential for cycle time reduction.

As for the program for the transition to larger diameter wafers, work in this direction will begin this year, and already next year the first goals should be achieved: ensuring the availability of 450 mm silicon wafers, developing guidelines and standards for integrating 450 mm production, creating a prototype test bench.
