The world’s most powerful “living battery” Sony generates electricity from sugar and air

Sony claims the power supply is the world’s most powerful “passive biological battery”. A biological battery or biobattery is usually called a device that generates electricity using energy sources such as carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids and fats, and decomposing enzymes.

The search for a new power source for mobile devices led Sony experts to create a bio-battery based on carbohydrates (sugar) and catalytic enzymes, which uses the principles of energy generation inherent in living organisms.

The prototypes of the cells of this battery with dimensions of 39 x 39 x 39 mm demonstrated an output power of 50 mW (open circuit voltage – 0.8 V), which, at the moment, is the best indicator in the world for passive batteries. This power is quite enough for practical applications – for example, four cells combined into a battery can power the miniature Walkman NW-E407 that uses flash memory (pictured).

A passive battery is a battery in which reagents such as glucose and oxygen penetrate the electrodes by natural diffusion. Active type batteries use a forced reagent feed mechanism. In general, passive systems have a simpler structure, well suited for miniaturization, and active systems provide increased output power.

The company calls the key points of development the creation of a technology that improves the fixation of enzymes and a mediator (conductor of electricity) on the anode; obtaining a cathode structure providing efficient oxygen absorption; optimization of the electrolyte composition taking into account the battery structure.
