S-Touch – cost effective sensors for a variety of portable devices
STMicroelectronics has announced a new family of sensor chips, the main characteristic of which is very low power consumption. New items were presented shortly after the signing of a licensing agreement with the Korean company ATLab.
Sensors are designed for integration into portable devices: mobile phones, PDAs, laptops and multimedia players, as well as other high-tech devices. The S-Touch family of sensors presented by STMicroelectronics uses ATLab capacitive touch technology based on a fully digital architecture, which made it possible to do without a microcontroller (and, as a result, reduced current consumption to 1 μA). The first products in the family are 8 and 12 channel devices.
S-Touch complements the previously presented QST series of sensors, designed for more complex applications or for those cases where the device’s microcontroller performs additional functions.
8-channel sensor is made in a QFN16-package with dimensions of 2.6×1.8 mm. Sensor response time – 2 ms. In the future, it is planned to integrate Xpander technology into the devices of the S-Touch series, designed to accelerate the processing of tasks requiring I / O large amounts of data, special cost-effective modules Xpander Logic. This technology allows existing system processors to use a wide range of additional advanced I2C functions, including a keyboard controller (up to 96 keys) with function keys and hotkeys.
Trial copies of the 12-channel STMPE1208 sensor are expected in the first half of this year, the start of mass production is scheduled for September. 8-channel STMPE821 will be available as a trial in September, mass production will start in January next year. The cost of solutions is 1.6 and 1.4 dollars (in bulk quantities), respectively.
