New Microchip Technology Instruments Designed for Smart Sensors

A relatively recently arisen class of applications, which are usually called “smart sensors” (Smart Sensor), makes special requirements for the element base. In particular, power consumption and size are critical for embedded microcontrollers, DSPs, sensors and other components.

Microchip Technology, a microcontroller and analog semiconductor company, has announced a family of Digital Signal Controller (DSC) dsPIC33FJ12GP. The novelties are especially well suited for use in “smart sensors”, because, firstly, they are the smallest DSC in the world, secondly, they have low power consumption, and, thirdly, they are inexpensive.

Embedded system designers are often forced to separate sensors and processors because the size of the components does not allow for placing everything in one place without increasing the size of the sensors or redesigning the product. This, in turn, can adversely affect the performance and immunity of the system. In the case of dsPIC33FJ12GP, designers can move the signal processor close to the sensor, eliminating the source of interference and offloading the central processor. This is what the Smart Sensor concept looks like.

The dimensions of the 18- and 28-pin housings selected for the device family are only 6 x 6 mm. Controllers start at $ 1.99 per batch of 10,000. At the same time, performance at the level of 40 MIPS opens up a wide field of applications for dsPIC33FJ12GP.

The dsPIC33FJ12GP includes built-in A / D converters (up to 10 channels, 10 or 12 bits) capable of up to 1.1M conversions per second and oversampling to improve signal-to-noise ratio. DsPIC33FJ12GP capabilities also allow for digital filtering – more efficient and does not require external components, unlike analog filters. The controllers are equipped with 12 KB of flash memory, 1 KB of RAM, UART, SPI and I2C interface blocks. In principle, when solving some tasks, dsPIC33FJ12GP devices can act as the only processor in the system.
