Qimonda starts production of “mobile” RAM with a density of 512 Mbit and 75 nm
The memory demand of portable electronic devices is constantly increasing. The reason for this is the increasing convergence and focus on the multimedia component. To implement a variety of functions, more and more powerful processors are needed, more flash memory for storing programs and data, and more and more RAM, which is in demand in complex processing algorithms.
At the same time, the designers of portable electronic devices constantly have to work within strict limits of size and power consumption – as they become more functional, human electronic satellites must remain compact. That is why manufacturers of electronic components are interested in the production of miniature devices with reduced power consumption. One of the obvious steps in this direction is the development of more subtle norms and technological processes optimized according to the criterion of energy consumption of manufactured devices.
A striking example of the above is 512 Mbit random access memory, which Qimonda began to supply its customers with trial samples. We are talking about the so-called “mobile” RAM (Mobile-RAM – the official name of the product family), manufactured at 75 nm. Products are available in the form of ready-made memory components and a kind of “semi-finished” – tested chips.
The main feature of the new memory, which the company emphasizes, is the lower power consumption. The novelty is said to consume 80% less power than standard DRAM of the same density. For the design of the memory, miniature FBGA packages with a thickness of 1 mm were chosen.
The main areas of application of Mobile-RAM are smartphones, GPS navigators, digital cameras and players.
