World record for communication range via WiFi – 304 km!
Ubiquiti Networks and Italian Amateurs (Italian Center for Radio Activities, C.I.S.A.R) announced a new world record for 5-GHz WiFi communication range – 304 km.
Communication was established using Ubiquiti XtremeRange5 mini-PCI radios and two parabolic antennas. The line connected the Italian island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea and the central part of the country.
XtremeRange5 cards were selected for their high sensitivity. The main problem in communication at such distances is the task of accurately positioning antennas, which have an extremely sharp radiation pattern. The high sensitivity of the receivers helped to solve this problem without the involvement of additional technical means. First, an antenna with a wider main lobe of the directional pattern was connected to one of the stations, and with its help, the beam of the second antenna was “captured”, after which the participants of the experiment connected a second narrow-beam antenna and performed the final tuning. The data exchange rate was allegedly 5 Mbps.
The communication channel was deployed not for the sake of a record, as such – in the words of C.I.S.A.R, it became an important part of the program, providing for the coverage of the entire country with a broadband signaling network.
