Texas Instruments introduces high-k materials technology
Despite the fact that, as we have already reported, Texas Instruments Corporation intends to stop developing its own technological processes at 45 nm standards, the company plans to use a number of advanced technologies in its 45 nm production. One such technology is a new hafnium-based material that provides a high dielectric constant (high-k).
TI reports published today that the new material provides 30% less leakage current than traditional silicon dioxide (SiO2). The company plans to switch from 65nm to 45nm norms using 193nm lithographic tools to provide twice the performance (IC release). TI expects 45nm SoCs (previews expected by mid-2021) to deliver 30% faster performance while consuming 40% less power.
The company’s press release emphasizes that hafnium dielectric film is also one of the promising materials for applications for thinner rates, 32 nm. Obviously, TI intends to offer its technology to future manufacturing partners.
