The fly robot is ready to take off!

A life-size replica of a fly robot takes off on its maiden flight at Harvard University. Weighing 60 mg and a wingspan of three centimeters, the tiny mechanism uses movements borrowed from a living prototype to fly. While the researchers still have a lot of work to do, they are confident that one day such flying robots will be able to perform reconnaissance functions or serve to detect harmful chemicals.

The development was funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the central research organization of the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, known as the creator of the ARPAnet network, which became the prototype of the Internet. The military is attracted by the tiny size of the device and its resemblance to a living insect – very valuable qualities for a scout robot.

One of the difficult tasks facing the scientists was the task of reproducing the movements that ensure the flight. First of all, the limitations of existing production processes interfered with the creation of durable and lightweight parts of the mechanism. Scientists have concluded that simple scaling cannot solve the problem: the motors, bearings and joints commonly used in large robots are not suitable for a structure the size of a fly.

Some of the parts could be made using MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) technology. But this approach was costly and time consuming. Researchers Needed a Cheaper, Faster Process.

And such a process was created by them. Using laser micromachining, scientists cut thin sheets of carbon fiber into two-dimensional structures with an accuracy of a few micrometers. Polymer sheets were cut in the same way. By carefully arranging sheets of carbon fiber and polymer, scientists were able to form the necessary parts.

For example, to create a flexible joint, a strip of polymer was laid on two tiny pieces of carbon fiber spaced a short distance from each other. Then, two more pieces of carbon fiber were placed on it. After that, the parts were fastened to each other, forming some semblance of the letter H, in which the jumper was made of flexible polymer, and the legs were made of durable carbon fiber.

By composing the resulting details, the developers were able to create rather complex blocks that were able to perform the necessary movements exactly as intended. To power the mechanism, electroactive polymers were used, which change their shape under the influence of electrical impulses.

It took more than seven years to create the robot. During this time, the flight dynamics was studied, suitable materials and technologies were found, various technical solutions were tested.

So far, the robot is flying on a leash that sets the direction of its movement. It also receives power. The next step should be the creation of a microscopic controller capable of controlling the movement of the “robo-fly” and transferring the power source to its board (according to the researchers, modern lithium-ion technologies are capable of providing the robot with up to five minutes of autonomous flight). In fact, by raising the robot fly into the air, scientists took only the first step. They still have to develop sensors, create software that allows them to detect and avoid obstacles, and solve other problems.
